AMESBURY - SU 1 541 11/2 Chinese Temple
10.1.53 GV II* Garden ornament. 1772, by Sir William Chambers, for the Duchess of Queensbury. Chilmark stone with knapped flint outlining zig-zag and chain patterns. Slate roof. Square cella, straddling leet from River Avon on a single wide arch. Timber verandah around all sides with lean-to roof and a Chinese pattern balustrade, gabled central to each face and extended out on two sides to form canopy to steps. Perron stair with handrails. Timber door with brass vents in a moulded stone doorcase. Large oval windows, one each side, with timber grilles and interior shutters. Extensively and well restored 1986-7, and set in new Chinese style garden. Interior has domed ceiling. Group value as part of the landscape designed by Henry Flitcroft, 1726-30, and Charles Bridgeman, 1730- 38, added to by others during the C18.
